Descendants Wiki

Rapunzel is the protagonist of the 2010 animated film Tangled. She is one of the heroines of Auradon, the wife of Eugene Fitzherbert, and mother of Ruby and the Long Haired Princess. She is also the Queen of Tangleton.

Background Information[]

Physical Appearance[]

Rapunzel is a woman with a long blonde hair, dressed with a pink dress. In Tangled, her hair was cut in the climax, becoming brown, which, as can be seen in Frozen, it remained for at least 3 years, in Descendants she is shown with her hair again as blonde and long.

Tangled-Rapunzel -2

Rapunzel as she appears originally in Tangled.

When her mother, the queen of the Kingdom of Corona, was pregnant with her, she fell ill, so the royal guards brought her a flower that cured her, and which also caused Rapunzel to be born with hair that offered the same powers as the flower, which caused Gothel to kidnap her to offer her eternal youth, locking her in a tower and isolating her from the outside world while pretending to be her mother.

Years later, after the thief Flynn Rider arrived at her tower, and with a crown in her possession, Rapunzel took the crown from him and offered to return it to him in exchange for taking her to see the lanterns. After a trip through the forest, they arrived at the Kingdom of Corona, where Rapunzel was able to fulfil his dream. When the Stabbington Brothers ambushed her, Gothel knocked them unconscious and tricked Rapunzel into telling her that Flynn had betrayed him and his two partners.

Rapunzel returned to the tower with Gothel, but once there he discovered the truth that she was the princess of Corona and that Gothel kidnapped her. Gothel held her back, and Flynn later arrived, whom Gothel also attacked. But after Flynn cut Rapunzel's hair, the loss of her magical powers caused Gothel to age into ash. Once safe, they both returned to Corona, where Rapunzel was able to be with her real parents.

Rapunzel and Eugene at Ben's coronation.

She and her husband Eugene are seen present at Ben's coronation.

  • In early production of Descendants, she was going to have a daughter named Anxelin.
  • She is the fourth and so far last protagonist to be raised by a villain, the first being Snow White, the second Cinderella, and the third Quasimodo.
  • Rapunzel shares a lot of characteristics with Quasimodo in that both are raised by their film's villain, are kept in isolation in a tower, sneak into the outside world despite the villain telling them that the world is dark and cruel, are inflicted with the cruelty that drives them back, but they eventually discover the wickedness of the villain.
  • Rapunzel has a distinctive meaning to her name; "Rapunzel" is a kind of German lettuce, as in the original German fairy tale Rapunzel's peasant father is stealing rampion for her mother from a witch.
  • Rapunzel's favorite food is hazelnut soup, as alleged by Mother Gothel.
  • In the original story, Rapunzel did have healing powers but they were held in her tears and were used to restore the prince's sight. Disney expanded this myth to give Rapunzel her healing hair. This was briefly alluded near the end of the film, as Rapunzel somehow manages to unknowingly focus all of her cut hair's magic into a tear, reviving Eugene.
  • In addition to her appearance in Tangled, in the film Frozen it is seen that Rapunzel and Eugene attended Queen Elsa's coronation in Arendelle together.
  • It has never been made clear in the film whether Rapunzel was the name given by her parents or Gothel. But it is believed that her parents gave her name from a plant in the royal garden as mentioned in Inside the Journal.
  • Rapunzel was the first Disney Princess shown in full computer animation. In fact, she is also the first Disney Princess to make her debut as a computer-animated character. Special software was used specifically to animate Rapunzel's hair because no one had ever animated so much hair before (animators have said that Rapunzel's hair is approximately 70 feet long and holds about 100,000 strands).
    • She is also the only heroine originating from a computer animated film in the Descendants franchise with known descendants.
