There was previously a reference in the novel Escape from the Isle of the Lost regarding his parents' friend Little John being referred to as someone "big as a bear", instead of directly a bear as in the animated film, implying that those characters who are originally humanoid animals in Disney's animated films, in the Descendants world are normal humans, which implies that in Descendants his parents are also humans just like him.
