He is one of the soldiers enlisted in the army to fight with the Huns, often standing alongside his friends Ling and Chien Po. Initially being harsh against Mulan (under her alias "Ping"), over time she gained appreciation for him, becoming his friend.

After a confrontation against the Huns in the mountain in which he tried to participate, finally fleeing from an avalanche, Mulan's identity was discovered, and she was sentenced to execution, with which he, Ling and Chien Po tried to prevent it. Although General Li Shang forgave her.

After which, the soldiers went to the imperial palace, where Mulan tried to warn them that the Huns survived the avalanche. When the Huns kidnapped the Emperor, Yao, along with Ling and Chien Po, helped Mulan by disguising themselves as women to fool the Hun soldiers, until they finally saved the Emperor. Finally, he, along with the rest of the citizens, thanked Mulan for her actions.
